The vesak day in the buddhist calendar is of outmost importance to all buddhists as it marks the birth, the enlightenment and the parinirvana of the Lord Buddha. This year the vesak ceremony of the Mahamevna Monastery of Sydney was held on Friday the 8th of May and a large number of devoted buddhists participated. Many devotees cancelled other arrangements to observe sil and commemorate vesak. Devotees participated in offering dhana to the bhanthe and the preceptors.Children also participated by lighting buckets and putting up vesak lanterns as an aamisa pujava for the Lord Buddha. The dhammachakkappavathana sutra was chanted in pali with the meaning of the sutra explained in sinhalese. For many devotees it was the first time they had taken sil on the vesak full moon day after coming to australia and it was a memorable day. The organizing committee would like to thank all devotees who helped in various ways to make this event a success.
